Abstract:
In a densely settled area there is a great pressure to nature by those seeking relaxation. Various users such as hikers, riders or bikers frequent trails and informal trails. As a result, disturbances to wildlife may arise.
To investigate these problems, a method is being developed to collect and evaluate the relevant parameters with the present work. This study focuses on larger wild animals such as deer.
Recording sheets are developed for trails and for so-called point objects and tested using test perimeters. Point objects are facilities for recreational activities such as benches, fireplaces, cabins, but also built structures for mountain bikers, so-called Technical Trail Features. The parameters collected are type of use, frequency of use, class, surface, width, visibility, exposure to light, habitat, percentage of tree, shrub and herb layer and opportunity to leave the trail. For point objects, the trail related parameters are omitted, but added are type of the object, length and width as well as the material of the Technical Trail Features.
For both test perimeters deer data from collared animals are available. These and the data collected in the field are being visualized with geographic information system (GIS) and evaluated. Due to the small number of tracked animals only tendencies can be shown, but no statistically relevant conclusions are made. It seems that at night the animals feel undisturbed in open landscape. During the day, however, meadows, but also woodlands intensely used by people, are shunned.
While developing the method it becomes clear that the paper version of the field recording sheets is cumbersome. Better suited the iPad. Not all parameters that have been discussed initially can be collected in the field. Data such as slope or trail network density are easier determined with GIS. The present method development will provide a basis to further develop the field recording and subsequent evaluation and to gain insights into interactions of trails respectively their users and wildlife.
