Abstract:
The attitude of the population to a park and its acceptance are well researched, their identification with a park, however, hardly. Therefore, this work examined how the local population identifies with a natural park, including the process of identification and its relevance to the success of the project. For this purpose, 12 problem-centred interviews were conducted in the Beverin Nature Park and the rejected Neckertal Nature Park and analysed with the Grounded Theory. Various understandings of a nature park were detected with different potentials of identification. Two different processes of understanding were identified: i) an initial feeling of emptiness in relation to the park promotes a deeper engagement and finally identification with it; ii) certain backgrounds already formed a clear understanding, which inhibits further engagement. Identification also showed positive effects on the park projects. It is promoted by allowing an initial emptiness, better addressing the emotional level, and focusing on the region's decision-making autonomy.

Leading questions:
1. How does the local population identify itself with its regional nature park?
2. How and through which processes can identification develop?
3. Which relevance does identification have in regard to the success of a park project?
