Abstract:
National park tourism can positively contribute to regional economic development. Because of their mandate to protect the environment, it is essential that in addition to economic considerations, ecological aspects are regarded as well. Through the identification of visitor segments that are both economically and ecologically favorable, the so-called sustainability-profitability trade-off can be overcome. In the present study, an appropriate segmentation of visitors of the Berchtesgaden National Park is performed and i.a. two segments of structured and hard ecotourists as well as the main factors influencing spending behavior and attitudes towards sustainable tourism are identified. Finally, recommendations for the design of sustainable tourism products are derived and theoretical implications are discussed.
