Abstract:
ProSpecieRara (PSR) is a Swiss foundation for the cultural and genetic diversity of plants
and animals. They are dedicated to preserve rare and old varieties. In addition to general
Information about these varieties, PSR has also got references to the origins of said varieties
in their database. To enable a search for varieties connected to a certain region or
municipality they developed a concept to adapt the database accordingly. This concept
classifies the varieties into four levels. These four levels are village/municipality, canton,
region, and Switzerland. Every level has a set of criteria that defines when a variety is
classified into said level. This bachelor thesis evaluates the potential of this concept in regard
to the project region Jurapark Aargau (JPA) and creates a regional recommendation
of PSR-varieties for JPA.
A database research was conducted and produced a list of 186 varieties. The list consists
of 132 fruits, 13 berries, 21 vegetables, 11 ornamental plants, 1 grapevine, 3 potato varieties
and 2 crops. All of these varieties have a historical connection to the parc region, the
partner municipalities of JPA or the cantons Aargau and Solothurn.
All of the varieties that were found during the research were classified into the aforementioned
levels. Thus, the concept could be evaluated and revised. It was evident which criteria
had to be revised and where new criteria had to be formulated. For example, there
was a criterium missing that defined what to do, when a variety has local specific synonyms.
Furthermore, potentials for identification with a variety were evaluated. Such a potential
could be that a variety is named after a village.
To pass on the information to JPA, the varieties that were found through database research
are compiled into a list. Said list is inspired by other lists for variety recommendations
that PSR has done before. It is important that the inhibition threshold for interested
people is as low as possible. The historic connection to JPA is listed for every variety.
Furthermore, possibilities are listed to encourage the cultivation of varieties in the parc region.
A possible strategy is to develop a product idea to ensure that farmers can sell their
yield.
The improved concept as well as the list of varieties can be viewed as incomplete. To find
all varieties with a historic connection to JPA that are in the database of PSR, no search
criteria can be forgotten. And since for the evaluation of the concept only varieties with a
connection to JPA were considered, primarily criteria related to fruits were added.
Implementing the concept in the entire database would be a time-consuming project for
PSR. But if they decide to do so, it is important to do it precisely and document all uncertainties.
Time could be saved, if work is done by a person that works for PSR. Despite the
defined criteria, it is likely that every person classifies the varieties differently. Thus, to
guarantee a consistent database only one person should do this job.
